What is the difference between a flexible PCB and a PCB?
Thickness
FPC is generally thin, with a thickness between 0.1-0.3mm, while the conventional thickness of PCB is between 0.6-2.0mm.
Weight
Because FPC is relatively thin, it will be much lighter than PCB.
Bendability
Because FPC mainly uses PI material, the characteristic of this material is easy to bend, so compared to PCB, the bending performance is more obvious
Surface protection
The commonly used solder mask material for FPC is a covering film, while the traditional PCB generally uses solder mask ink.
Auxiliary accessories
In order to make FPC rigid in the assembly, reinforcement is often used, that is, pasting the cut FR4/steel sheet/PI at a specific position, which is not used in traditional PCBs.
What is the thinnest flex PCB?
When you are evaluating the thickness of an FPC, you need to have a certain understanding of the material and structure.
The thinnest PI is generally 25um, if it is an adhesive substrate, 20um of glue is needed to attach copper foil, the thickness of copper foil is generally 12-35um, if the adhesiveless substrate is used, then there is less layer of glue, so the final thickness will be thinner.
The thinnest single-sided FPC is with a thickness of 0.05mm without coverlay.
The thinnest Double layer FPC will be 0.075mm without coverlay.
The coverlay attached to one side will increase the thickness by about 40-45um.
If you need an ultra-thin PCB with better flatness, then you can consider our solution to replace FPC, because the flatness of FPC is not particularly good, but it is relatively necessary to sacrifice bending performance.
