Single-sided FPC is the simplest flexible pcb board, which has only one layer of chemically etched conductive patterns. It is usually processed on the basis of two raw materials: "substrate + transparent glue + copper foil" and "protective film + transparent glue".
First, on the raw materials, the copper foil is chemically etched and other processes to obtain the desired conductive graphic circuit; Then, on the protective film, holes are drilled to expose the corresponding pads; After cleaning, the two raw materials are combined by the rolling method; Finally, ENIG is performed on the exposed pad.
SEEKPCB has been engaged in flexible pcb fabrication and R&D for more than 10 years, and has accumulated a lot of manufacturing experience.SEEKPCB is willing to provide you with free consultation on FPC-related questions, and the following are some frequently asked questions from customers.
Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC) is a highly reliable, excellent flexible printed circuit board made of polyimide or polyester film as the substrate. Flexible circuit (FPC) is the technology developed by the United States in the 70s of last century for the development of space rocket technology, which is a highly reliable, excellent flexible printed circuit made of polyester film or polyimide as the substrate, and the circuit design is embedded in a thin and flexible plastic sheet that can be bent, so that a large number of precision components are stacked in a narrow and limited space, thus forming a flexible circuit that can be bent. This circuit can be bent at will, folded and folded, light weight, small size, good heat dissipation, easy installation, breaking through the traditional interconnection technology. In the structure of flexible circuits, the materials composed are insulating films, conductors and adhesives.
Thickness
FPC is generally thin, with a thickness between 0.1-0.3mm, while the conventional thickness of PCB is between 0.6-2.0mm.
Weight
Because FPC is relatively thin, it will be much lighter than PCB.
Bendability
Because FPC mainly uses PI material, the characteristic of this material is easy to bend, so compared to PCB, the bending performance is more obvious
Surface protection
The commonly used solder mask material for FPC is a covering film, while the traditional PCB generally uses solder mask ink.
Auxiliary accessories
In order to make FPC rigid in the assembly, reinforcement is often used, that is, pasting the cut FR4/steel sheet/PI at a specific position, which is not used in traditional PCBs.
When you are evaluating the thickness of an FPC, you need to have a certain understanding of the material and structure.
The thinnest PI is generally 25um, if it is an adhesive substrate, 20um of glue is needed to attach copper foil, the thickness of copper foil is generally 12-35um, if the adhesiveless substrate is used, then there is less layer of glue, so the final thickness will be thinner.
The thinnest single-sided FPC is with a thickness of 0.05mm without coverlay.
The thinnest Double layer FPC will be 0.075mm without coverlay.
The coverlay attached to one side will increase the thickness by about 40-45um.
If you need an ultra-thin PCB with better flatness, then you can consider our solution to replace FPC, because the flatness of FPC is not particularly good, but it is relatively necessary to sacrifice bending performance.
